Sound For Vision: Parallel Lines: The Engagement
// August 8th, 2010 // Blog, Projects, Website Update
My latest audio project has has me once again being involved in both the production and post production of the project. “SPOILER’S AHEAD!”
“The Engagement” is a short film from director Richard Simpson for an online competition called “Parallel Lines” put on by Philips Cinema and Ridley Scott & Associates.
The rules: Make a film no longer than 3 minutes about anything you want using the following script:
WHAT IS THAT?
IT’S A UNICORN
NEVER SEEN ONE UP CLOSE BEFORE
BEAUTIFUL
GET AWAY, GET AWAY
I’M SORRY
“The Engagement” was filmed over the course of two days at Crease Clinic, a closed down section of Riverview Hospital, a mental health facility located in Coquitlam, British Columbia. This location has been used extensively over the years in Major Motion Pictures and TV Series (The X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Watchmen, and Fringe to name a few) It’s a stunning place and at times a little creepy as people over the years have claimed that this building is haunted.

With a cast and crew of 38, my job was serving as Boom Operator, capturing the Actor’s dialog and a ton of explosions, crashes, destroyed furniture and whatever else was thrown my way, literally
Boom Pole? check!. Protective Eye and Earwear? Double Check!
The two day shoot was a crazy and exciting experience. At the time, the Post Production crew had already been put into place, but I was determined to be involved in any way I could audio wise. The following week, Director Richard Simpson asked if I could compose a piece of music for the first 30 seconds of the film, a romantic Piano piece setting the mood between the two main characters who had just gotten engaged.

As things progressed the entire score evolved utilizing all four days to churn out what would compliment the high paced action sequence’s.
Here’s my score from “The Engagement”. Enjoy.

Wow, I wanted to ask about the score, silly me I thought it was ‘borrowed’ music. Great job, it totally captures the mood of the movie. I’m seriously impressed!!!!!
